What is PAT testing?
PAT testing — portable appliance testing — is a check that the electrical equipment in your premises is safe to keep using. Anything with a plug or a flexible lead is in scope, from a kettle to a 110V site drill.
It combines a careful visual inspection with electrical tests using calibrated equipment. Most faults are found by eye: damaged leads, cracked plugs, signs of overheating, poor previous repairs. The instrument tests confirm what cannot be seen.
The point is not to collect stickers. It is to find the equipment that is about to become a problem — and to leave you with records that show your equipment is being maintained.

PAT testing is not itself named in law, and it is not true that every appliance must be tested annually.
What the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require is that electrical equipment is maintained so as to prevent danger. HSE guidance is that the type and frequency of inspection and testing should be based on risk — the equipment, its environment, how it is used and who uses it.

Every appliance gets labelled
Once an item has been tested it carries a dated BPAT label, so anyone — a member of staff, a guest, an inspector, an insurer — can see its status at a glance without opening a folder. Failed items are labelled just as clearly and taken out of service. Note: labels currently show an old phone number and will be reprinted with the new logo and 07348 733956.

PAT testing questions
What is PAT testing?+
Inspection and testing of electrical appliances to check they are safe to keep using. It covers anything with a plug or flexible lead, and combines a careful visual inspection with electrical tests using calibrated equipment.
Do I legally need PAT testing?+
PAT testing is not named in law. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained so as to prevent danger, and inspection and testing is the recognised way of showing you have done that. Anyone telling you the law demands an annual test on every appliance is overstating it.
How often should PAT testing be carried out?+
There is no single legal interval. HSE guidance is that frequency should be based on risk — the type of equipment, how and where it is used, how often it moves and who uses it. A site drill needs looking at far more often than a desk printer. We suggest an interval for your premises and record it on your report.
How much does PAT testing cost?+
Prices are fixed by appliance count: £49 for 1–20 appliances, £69 for 21–50, £99 for 51–100, then £129 and up for larger sites. There is no call-out charge on top and no per-item add-ons. Send an approximate count and we will confirm the band before anything is booked.
What appliances need PAT testing?+
Anything with a plug or a flexible lead: kettles, microwaves, fridges, IT equipment, chargers, vacuum cleaners, heaters, power tools, and extension leads — which consistently produce the highest proportion of failures.
Do landlords need PAT testing?+
Not as a named annual requirement. Appliances you supply must be safe, and a dated test record is the clearest way to evidence it. Separately, private rented homes in England need the fixed installation inspected at least every five years — that is an EICR, which is a different job. More in PAT testing for landlords.
Do holiday lets need PAT testing?+
No law names it specifically, but you are providing equipment for paying guests in a business setting, which brings a duty to keep it safe — and many insurers and letting agencies ask to see appliance testing records. See holiday let PAT testing.
What happens if an appliance fails?+
It is labelled as failed, taken out of service and recorded with the reason. Minor faults — a badly wired plug, the wrong fuse — are put right and retested on the spot. Anything beyond that is reported so you can decide whether to repair or replace.
Do I receive a PAT testing certificate?+
Yes — a digital PDF report containing an asset register of every item tested, the result for each, notes on any failures, and a certificate of testing for your file.
How long does PAT testing take?+
A small office or a two-bedroom holiday let is usually a morning. Access makes the biggest difference — equipment behind furniture or in use takes longer. You get a realistic time slot with your quote.

The number of appliances — and nothing else
Your band comes from the appliance count alone. A rough figure is enough to book from; you do not need an exact inventory. If the number turns out to fall in a different band on the day, we tell you before carrying on rather than adjusting the invoice afterwards.
What does not change the price
Premises type, access, occupancy, travel within our North Devon area, and your documentation are all included in the band. A commercial kitchen takes us longer than a bedroom lamp, and a trading shop longer than an empty cottage — that is our problem, not a surcharge on your invoice.
Weekends and out of hours
Evening, weekend and changeover-day slots are available. If a slot carries any difference, it is stated in your quote before you book — never added afterwards.
Multiple properties
Each property is priced on its own band. Properties grouped in one area share a single visit, which is what makes portfolio work cheaper per property. Send a list with postcodes for a portfolio price.

Is there a minimum charge?+
The £49 band, covering 1 to 20 appliances, is our minimum charge. It is a single fixed price for the whole visit, with no call-out fee on top.
Do you charge for failed items?+
Failed items are tested and recorded like any other, so they count towards your band the same way. Minor repairs — replacing a plug or a fuse — are included rather than charged as extras.
Is there a travel charge?+
No. Travel anywhere within our standard Barnstaple and North Devon area is included in the band price. Outside it, any travel element is stated up front — never added afterwards.
Why is very cheap PAT testing a false economy?+
